On 27 August 2025, the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Roundtable with the theme “Forging ahead Regional Cooperation for New Progress of Asia Pacific Integration” was held in Kuala Lumpur. Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Vice Chairperson of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended and delivered remarks. H.E. Ambassador Shi Zhongjun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) attended upon invitation.
Speaking at the Special Session on “Revitalize the Bandung Spirit for Stronger Solidarity and Cooperation”, SG Shi emphasized that on the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference, revisiting the legacy of the Bandung Spirit of “Solidarity, Friendship, and Cooperation” holds practical significance for deepening Asia-Pacific cooperation and promoting regional development. In the face of ongoing global changes unseen in a century and geopolitical challenges, all parties should stand united to safeguard peace and stability, prioritize cooperation for shared prosperity, and embrace openness, inclusiveness, and mutual learning among civilizations.
SG Shi pointed out that the Bandung Spirit is deeply ingrained in ASEAN’s DNA, and the growth of ASEAN-China relations stands as a shining example of the Bandung Spirit in action. Looking forward, China is willing to work with ASEAN to accelerate the implementation of the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, jointly build a closer ASEAN-China community with a shared future of peace, stability, and sustainable development.
The session was chaired by former Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa. Guest speakers include Volkan Bozk?r, former Minister for EU Affairs of Turkey, Zhang Jun, Secretary General of the BFA, Vanxay Tavinyan, Vice Chairman of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee’s Commission for Propaganda and Training, and Surakiart Sathirathai, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. Participants agreed that the Bandung Spirit remains relevant over time. Countries in the Asia-Pacific should use it as a bond to deepen mutual trust, focus on development and expand cooperation. They should jointly uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, advocate for an equal and orderly multipolar world and inclusive and beneficial economic globalization, actively promote the Asia-Pacific regional integration process, achieve digital and green transformation, strengthen inter-civilization dialogue and exchanges, so as to translate the Bandung Spirit into concrete actions to address global challenges and achieve sustainable development.
During the conference, SG Shi also attended the Working Luncheon on Navigating the Trade War and gave an interview to Malaysia’s ASTRO AWANI news channel, exchanging views on topics including ASEAN-China economic and trade cooperation against the backdrop of tariff wars.
