Elephant Race Festival, the biggest festival of the Central Highlands of Viet Nam, opens around the 3rd month of the lunar calendar. It honors the martial spirit of the M’nong ethnic group in Buon Me Thuot, who are admired for their bravery and excellent skills for hunting wild elephant. All elephants and mahout riders go to the starting line and with the signal of a horn, begin the race on the 400 - 500 meter track. The racing elephants, wild sounds of drums and gongs, and cheering crowd make the race one of the most exciting environments.
