Understanding Myanmar

Myanmar is a vast, beautiful country that still retains a greater part of its traditional values and culture. Visitors to the country are amazed to discover its wealth of culture, pristine nature, sincerely friendly people and their great pagodas.

Myanmar covers 261,228 square miles (676,578 sq km), and has a coastline measuring 1275 miles (2051 km). The terrain ranges from arid plains to cool, sprawling hills, ice-capped mountains, white-sand beaches, lush farmland, hidden valleys and thick virgin forest. The way of life for most of the population is based upon Theravada Buddhism which shows the path to harmonious living, and to avoid greed and attachment of material things. The people are deeply rooted in their beliefs and culture, and it is by those two things that they are driven in their daily lives and how they view the world, for their cultural values take precedent over desire for material wealth. Through Buddhist concepts the people learn to be gentle but proud, dignified yet friendly, reverent of elders and to enjoy life fully with a spontaneous sense of humour. This Buddhist land is dotted with tens of thousands of pagodas of all sizes, many of them glittering with layers of pure gold donated by devotees. It is a normal part of life for the locals but obviously not to the visitors from wealthy countries who are astonished to see shabbily-dressed pilgrims generously offering gold to the shrines or a family on a small farm happy to share their meal with passing strangers. Among the many amazing sites to visit are the spectacular, shimmering spire of the shwedagon pagoda towering over the skylineof Yangon; the magnificent ancient temples of Bagan; the many teak monasteries in and around Mandalay featuring intricate carvings; old pagoda complexes hidden in the beautiful hills of the Shan Plateau; Pristine white sand beaches; the magical Golden Rock Pagoda Perched on the edge of a cliff; immense stone temples of 18th century Mrauk Oo; snow-capped Mt Hkakaborazi, Southeast Asia’s highest at 19,296 feet (5881 m) and white-water rivers for professional and amateur rafters. Above all, the true treasures of the land are the people who live with strong traditional values of contentment, compassion, harmony, pride and dignity. They are still sheltered from sophistication and materialism. Come to Myanmar and let the friendly, hospitable people share with you their country and its culture.
