On 13 October 2025, the ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) and the People’s Government of Henan Province co-hosted the ASEAN-China (Henan) Smart Agriculture Development Exchange Forum during the 2025 ASEAN-China (Henan) Cooperation and Development Conference on Food and Agriculture. The forum was participated by high level officials from Henan Province, the ACC, representatives from the ASEAN secretariat, agricultural authorities, academic and business organizations of China and ASEAN countries along with over 200 participants. Panelists exchanged experiences on emerging smart agriculture technologies and innovation and explored the opportunities for China and ASEAN to cooperate in order to advance sustainable agricultural growth.

Secretary General Shi Zhongjun of the ACC highlighted the significance of cooperation between ASEAN and China in smart agriculture which would contribute to the strengthening of regional food security and sustainable development. The cooperation activities may include establishing technology sharing platforms, promoting policy alignment and standards of mutual recognition and empowering smallholder farmers with technology. The ACC will continue to strengthen its role to promote smart agriculture cooperation under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both sides.

Vice Governor Li Zhuo of Henan Province stated that Henan Province has been placing smart agriculture at the core of its development, accelerating the implementation of the “AI+” agriculture plan and building a highland for agricultural technology innovation in China. He noted that current agricultural cooperation between Henan Province and ASEAN countries is vibrant and flourishing and there are opportunities for the two sides to jointly pursue digital-driven agricultural revitalization through co-building R&D platforms, sharing application results and cultivating professionals.

Mr. Weerasak BoonChoen, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand highlighted the global challenges especially climate change that directly impact the agricultural sector and the significance of cooperation in digital innovation as it is a main tool to promote sustainable agricultural development.
Mr. Dian Sukmajaya, Senior Officer of ASEAN Secretariat reaffirmed the 2024 ASEAN-China Joint Statement on Promoting the Development of Smart Agriculture which aligns with ASEAN Community Vision 2045 in promoting resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred ASEAN. He emphasized the need for cooperation in capacity building, technology transfer and technical cooperation for long-term food security.

Participants shared views on the cooperation priorities between ASEAN and China including in capacity building, R&D and smart agriculture to meet green goals. They also exchanged experiences and best practices on revitalizing agriculture with digital technology so as to provide an “ASEAN-China Solution” for global agricultural modernization.
