Media Networking Meeting held during 1st ASEAN-China Media Cooperation Forum

On 12 May 2018, Media Networking Meeting themed "Exploring New Path for ASEAN-China Media Cooperation" was held during the 1st ASEAN-China Media Cooperation Forum.  Representatives from China and ASEAN news organizations including Xinhua News Agency, CGTN, CNTV, People's Daily Online, China Report Press, China ASEAN Panorama Magazine Agency, Yunnan Daily, news. sina.com.cn, The Straits Times (Singapore), Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore), Borneo Bulletin Daily (Brunei), Rasmei Kampuchea Daily Newspaper (Cambodia), Antara News Agency (Indonesia), Vientiane Times (Lao PDR), Post Today Newspaper (Thailand) and Vietnam News Agency (Viet Nam), participated in the meeting.

The meeting was moderated by Mr. Vithit Powattanasuk, Director of Information and Public Relations Division of ASEAN-China Centre. He said that this meeting aimed to provide a platform for media of both sides to discuss on cooperation so as to promote mutual understanding and practical cooperation. The representatives exchanged ideas on media digital cooperation, personnel exchange and cooperation and media capacity training.

On media digital cooperation, Danson Cheong, correspondent from the Start Times (Singapore), Recto Mercene, senior reporter from Business Mirror (the Philippines), and Atman Ahdiat, editor from Antara News Agency (Indonesia), shared the view that media digitalization is the present trend. To meet its needs, traditional media needs to transform into modern one through information charts, visual materials and short videos. They expressed wishes to continue strengthening exchanges and cooperation with China in learning how to create and operate new media platforms such as mobile phone applications. At the same time, Chinese language could be added on the platform to better share ASEAN news and information to Chinese audience. Chinese media representatives, including Shen Xiaomeng, deputy director of the English Channel of CGTN, Li Yinan, news center editor of cctv.com, and Ling Shuo, senior journalist at International Department of Xinhua News Agency, respectively shared best practices in building media digitization mechanism.  They expressed that Chinese media would like to have exchange with the ASEAN counterparts on media transformation and better serve people on both sides through new forms, new platforms and new media.

On personnel exchange and cooperation, Jiayee Tiong, executive director from Asia Times (Malaysia), Do Le Ngoc Bi, assistant editor from Vietnam News Agency (Vietnam), and Thanchanok Jongyotying, senior editor from Spring News TV (Thailand), suggested that media of both sides could establish a network of citizen reporters based on a pool of more than 200,000 international students, set up a cooperation mechanism for in-depth cross-border reporting, build a data-sharing platform, co-produce TV programs and tourism documentaries, and invite Chinese media representatives to join ASEAN media cooperation mechanisms and platforms. Zhao Jun, editor-in-chief of China Report ASEAN, Wen Jing, reporter of news.sina.com.cn, and Wu Chengliang, deputy director of the Overseas Communication Department of People's Daily Online, said that the media organizations they represent have started cooperation with ASEAN countries in journalists exchange. They hoped the ASEAN media could help Chinese journalists to better understand the culture and society of ASEAN countries and thus convey ASEAN's image to Chinese people in a more comprehensive and real manner.

On media capacity building, Patithin Phetmeuangphuan, journalist from Vientiane Times (Lao PDR), Nurul HafizahBinti Hj Awang Besar, reporter of Borneo Bulletin Daily (Brunei), and Myint Zaw Aung, chief editor from 7 Day Daily Newspaper (Myanmar), suggested media of both sides to establish a journalist exchange training mechanism with duration of no less than three months, providing scholarships for media practitioners to study at school of journalism in each other's universities, and cooperate with each other on language learning and translation of dictionaries and related books. Gao Hang, president of China ASEAN Panorama Magazine Agency, Wu Chengliang, deputy director of the Overseas Communication Department of People's Daily Online, and Xiong Yan, editorial board member and director of International Communication Center of Yunnan Daily, stated that the Chinese media would like to establish a long-term exchange mechanism with its ASEAN counterparts and actively explore non-media business so as to use the media platform to better serve practical cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, education and culture.

The participants engaged actively in discussion on topics of common interest and explored cooperation on mutual benefits.
