On 24 October 2016, H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) and H.E. Ms. Magdalene Teo, Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to China met with Mr. Huang Lan, Vice Mayor of Nanjing.
Mr. Huang extended a warm welcome to the delegation and elaborated on the economic and social development of Nanjing and its mid- to long-term development plan. Nanjing, as an important city in eastern China, is at a crucial stage of innovation and opening-up. The government of Nanjing attaches great importance to fostering its friendship and cooperation with ASEAN. Nanjing is the first sister city of Brunei and is home to the Tomb of the King of Boni. It hopes to play an even greater role in China’s cooperation with Brunei and ASEAN as a whole and looks forward to continued strong support by ACC.
Ambassador Teo cited that Nanjing has been regarded as an important and unique place in the history of exchanges between Brunei and China and has maintained close contact with Brunei today. The Brunei government is working to diversify its economy and welcomes Chinese enterprises, especially those in Nanjing, to expand their businesses into Brunei. In addition, Brunei hopes to learn from Nanjing the best practices in terms of building industrial parks and training skilled personnel as well as to further increase tourism cooperation and personnel exchanges to deepen bilateral relations as next year marks the Year of ASEAN-China Tourism Cooperation.
Secretary-General Yang Xiuping thanked the city of Nanjing for the thoughtful arrangements and mentioned ACC’s mandate and its efforts in promoting bilateral trade, investment, education, culture, tourism, and other areas. She expressed the readiness of ACC to continue to harness its role as an inter-governmental organization to build up more platforms for sub-national exchanges and contribute more to China-Brunei and China-ASEAN relations.
