On 14 April 2015, the Webster University delegation, led by Professor Indira Ravindran, visited ASEAN-China Centre (ACC). The delegation comprised 2 instructors and 4 graduate students from the Global MA International Relations program. This was the third time that Webster University delegation visited ACC. Information and Public Relations Division (IPRD) of ACC took the lead in receiving the delegation.
The delegation met with Ms. Lada Phumas, Director of IPRD, Ms. Hong Mee Jien, Deputy Director of General Affairs and Coordination Division (GACD), Mr. Mouavixay Palee, Deputy Director of Trade and Investment Division (TID), Ms. Wang Jin, Deputy Director of Education, Culture and Tourism Division (ECTD), and Ms. Cao Ting, Deputy Director of IPRD of ACC.
Director Lada extended a warm welcome to the Webster University delegation, expressing that ACC was pleased to be the third year partner of Webster University in its Global MA International Relations program. Professor Indira Ravindran recalled the fond memories of visiting ACC during past two years and expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality rendered to the delegation, which was the first foreign student delegation to visit ACC.
During the meeting, Director Lada introduced ACC as a one-stop information and activities centre, priority areas of trade, investment, education, tourism and culture, as well as efforts to raise awareness about ASEAN and ASEAN-China relations and ACC's profile among the general public. She then opened the floor to Deputy Directors to brief on the work of respective division.
Highlight of the meeting was a 2-hour interactive dialogue between the delegation and ACC officials. The delegation was of the view that ASEAN-China relations were one of the key international relations globally, and was eager to learn more about ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership and its impact on the world. A wide range of issues were extensively discussed, covering ACC’s efforts to enhance functional cooperation between ASEAN and China within its mandates, short and long-term goal of ACC, how to assess the success of the work of ACC, ASEAN Connectivity, ASEAN Community building by December 2015, Malaysia’s priorities for its chairmanship for ASEAN in 2015, the significance of ASEAN to China and vice versa, as well as China’s policy and various initiatives towards ASEAN, etc.. The interactive dialogue was held in a pleasant and lively ambiance.
In her summary remarks, Director Lada highlighted that against the backdrop of ASEAN-China relations standing at a new starting point of the Diamond Decade, ACC would embrace more opportunities to further elevate ASEAN-China cooperation and would better fit its work to the actual needs and priorities of ASEAN-China relations and the ASEAN Community building.
The delegation thanked ACC for convening this informative and productive meeting, which they all found rewarding. The students took note of ACC’s work in reaching out and nurturing good friendship between ASEAN and China, and pledged their continued attention to ACC’s activities and ASEAN-China cooperation. The meeting also helped raise the profile of ACC in networking with academic institutions.
Prior to the meeting, IPRD Deputy Director Cao Ting accompanied the delegation to tour the photo exhibition on the development of ACC and ASEAN-China relations at the ACC ASEAN Hall, and gave a briefing on the development, organizational structure, roles, mandates and achievements of ACC.
