On 12 September 2014, Mr. Surya Paloh, Chairman of Media Group, Indonesia's largest television news network, accompanied by a delegation of 20 people, visited ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), where he was greeted by ACC Secretary-General Ma Mingqiang and ACC officials.
In his remarks, Mr. Surya Paloh thanked ACC for the invitation and hospitality extended to him and his delegation for this visit, and all the support to Indonesia through ACC's various activities. He praised ACC for its initiative to channel RMB 500,000 worth of sports equipment from Tai'ao Sports Company to Sukma Foundation, that would mean a great deal for the needy children attending the schools. He also said that Indonesia needed to learn from China's experience on how to become a global player and hoped that his visit to China would help contribute to strengthen partnership and cooperation between the two countries.
Secretary-General Ma in his welcoming remarks congratulated Mr. Surya Paloh for his conferment as Honorary Professor at the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) on 10 September 2014, and said that this well-deserved award was a symbol of BFSU's recognition of his dedication and commitment to promoting Sino-Indonesia relations. He welcomed Surya Paloh's plans to enhance cooperation between Indonesia-China on a number of areas, including scholarship programs and business ties. Secretary-General Ma also acknowledged and appreciated the Media Group's support for promoting ACC's works through its Metro TV network, and hoped that the good working relationship would be enhanced.
During his visit to ACC, Mr. Surya Paloh, together with representatives from Tai'ao Sports Company, witnessed the signing and presentation of "Certificate of Contribution" from Secretary-General of ACC to Chairman of Sukma Foundation, Rerie Moerdijat. The delegation also took the opportunity to view a short video about ACC's function and role, and toured ACC's Exhibition Hall accompanied by Secretary-General Ma.
Surya Paloh, one of Indonesia's most successful businessmen, founder and Chairman of Indonesia's 7th largest political party, the National Democrat (NasDem), is a well-known advocate for a stronger bilateral tie between Indonesia and China, particularly through people-to-people exchanges. The Metro TV, a subsidiary of Media Group, is Indonesia's first and only television network that broadcasts programs in Chinese language (Metro Xinwen), on a daily basis. As founder of Sukma Foundation, Surya Paloh contributed to the development of elementary schools that were destroyed in Aceh, a stricken city devastated by a huge earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 150 thousand Indonesians in 2004. The schools that Surya Paloh helped rebuild teach Chinese language along with Arabic and English.
