On 27 June 2014, Mr. Iwatani Shigeo, Secretary-General of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) led the TCS delegation to visit ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) and met with ACC Secretary-General Ma Mingqiang, accompanied by Mr. Tri Purnajaya, Director for Education, Culture and Tourism Division, Ms. Lada Phumas, Director for Information and Public Relations Division, Mr. Mouavixay Palee, Deputy Director for Trade and Investment Division and Ms. Pu Xiaojun, an officer from General Affairs and Coordination Division.
ACC Secretary-General Ma Mingqiang extended a warm welcome to TSC Secretary-General Iwatani Shigeo, who just visited ACC for the first time since he assumed his duty as secretary-General of TCS. The two Secretary-Generals exchanged views and information on the historical moment of the establishment of the two inter-governmental organizations, mechanisms, roles, responsibilities as well as past & current activities conducting to enhance ASEAN-China cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, education, culture and tourism (in the case of ACC) and the trilateral cooperation (cooperation between China, Japan and the ROK in the case of TCS).
ACC Secretary-General emphasized an important role of ACC as one-stop information and activities centre, focusing on functional cooperation in the above-mentioned five areas to promote and strengthen ASEAN-China strategic partnership. Secretary-General Ma highlighted some of ACC's concrete projects such as introducing ASEAN products and investment opportunity to the Chinese investors, shooting TV documentary in ASEAN countries, creating platform and partnership cooperation among the Chinese and ASEAN vocational colleges, organizing Chinese performance troops to ASEAN and ACC lecture series on ASEAN-China relations to the universities students in China. ACC Secretary-General also briefed on the outcome of the recent meeting among the three Secretary-Generals of ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC), ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC) and ACC, hosted by ACC on 19 June 2014.
TCS Secretary-General informed about TCS's projects and his vision to engage more with the trilateral cooperation mechanisms. TCS has supported an idea to create an East Asian Community and wishes to see further concrete cooperation between the trilateral cooperation among China, Japan and the ROK, and ASEAN. TCS Secretary-General expressed his will to cooperate with ACC, AKC and AJC if it deems appropriate.
After the interactive and fruitful meeting, ACC Secretary-General took TSC Secretary-General and the delegation toured the photo exhibition on the 11 members of ACC (10 ASEAN Member States and China) to enhance ASEAN-China relations at ACC ASEAN Hall. TSC Secretary-General was impressed by ACC's role and activities in raising awareness about ASEAN-China relations and ACC. He praised ACC with great kind words and expressed strongly belief in ACC as an effective mechanism to help promote close and cordial relations between ASEAN and China.
TCS was established by the leaders of China, Japan and the ROK in 2011 in ROK to contribute to the further cooperative relations among China, Japan and the ROK by providing support for the operation and management of the trilateral consultative mechanisms and by facilitating the exploration and implementation of cooperative projects.
ACC Secretariat was officially established by the 11 leaders of ASEAN and China in 2011 to undertake the activities to promote ASEAN-China relations in trade & investment and people-to-people exchange via education, culture and tourism.
